He found his first love amongst the group: Grietje (Greetje, Peggy) Zegwaard. After a short engagement they got married. Joop always concealed this marriage until very late in live. He didn't mention it to friends or his future wives. They grew apart and got divorced three and a half years later. When he was with the company of Wim Sonneveld, he fell in love with Conny Stuart. After a while his love was answered back and in 1957 they got married. They were very happy together and this period proved very important to her two sons (12 and 8 years old at the time). According to Conny Stuart's biography their marriage got very difficult because of Wim Sonneveld's possessive attitude. They got divorced three years later. In the early sixties he was with the revue company of Jan Blaaser. With this company were two girls Anny and Bep Wetzer: De Willanty's. They sang with an accordion. Bep was 18 years younger than Joop, but he fell totally in love with her. At first she didn't want to have anything to do with him, but gradually she started to love him too. Around that time she changed her name from Bep to Liz. In the spring of 1964 they got married. They got a daughter in February of 1965: Sandra. He was very proud of his daughter. After eight years they got divorced. Joop blamed this due to his busy work with Swiebertje and consequently not having enough time for his family. In the spring of 1972 a young blond beauty behind the bar of Het Kompas drew Joop's attention. She was Esther de Jong and 32 years younger than he was. They married in March of 1973. In 1974 their son was born: David. He turned out to be the spitting image of Joop. Not only in looks, but also in nature. He never went into the acting profession though. In March of 1979 a second child was born: Barbara. She became the apple of his eye. Esther and Joop were happy together until his death in 2005.
